After having a fabulous last weekend against the Oregon teams, our team was very determined to be ready for the Arizona weekend. Practice was very focused since a shot at the Pac-10 title was on the line depending on how we did in Arizona. After three days of practice, Thursday finally rolled around and everyone was very excited and relieved to be on break! We arrived in Arizona that night and headed over to our hotel. As we were driving in the desert, the cacti and dry weather reminded me much of my home area, Las Vegas.
Preparing for the Arizona match, we knew their team was going to come out very determined on their home court - and they did!. First set, we came out strong, but Arizona pushed back and won the next two sets. We pulled through after a close fourth set, and finally found our momentum to take over the fifth set. It was so great to see our team dominate like that! For dinner, we went to a local grocery store and were given a 15-minute limit on what to get. Thanks to Charlotte for helping me organize and decide what to get, I wasn't the usual last one rushing to the bus! I happened to make a good meal out of a bulk roll, Brie cheese, an apple, and then yogurt and granola. Yum!
Our next destination was Tempe. We arrived at our hotel and quickly jumped into bed after a long bus ride. The next day, however, there was a surprise waiting for us at Wells Fargo Arena! It was after our warm-ups when the setters go out to get extra reps and when the setters came back to the locker room exclaiming there was a bat flying around in the gym! Sure enough, right before the announcer was to name the starters of the game, we see the bat head straight for us - head on! I think all of us screamed; it was so funny! Some of the ASU staff were chasing it and trying to throw towels over it to catch it. Finally, the bat retreated to the rafters and we didn't interact with it too much after thankfully. Against Arizona State, our team was just as determined as the night before to really dominate and play our best! Our strong performance did us well and we won in three sets!
After the game, Denise had the Big Game on Gametracker, so naturally almost all of us kept saying, 'What's the score?' or 'Who's up?' every 15 seconds! I can say that we were very sad when we found out we lost. For dinner, we all convinced Denise to allow us to go to Whole Foods! Everyone was so pumped and again I consulted my grocery agent, Charlotte, on what to buy. It turned out to be another success!
Following a winning weekend in Arizona, our whole team is pumped and has been waiting to get a rematch with Cal! We are more than ready to gear up for this next match! Can't wait to `Rep the Bay!' with at least a share of the Pac-10 title on the line for our team!
We hope to see you soon at this weekend's last home game!-Hayley
