Coaches Homeward Bound
Three-fourths of the coaching staff will be homeward bound this weekend when the Bruins visit Tennessee. Head coach Nikki Caldwell and assistant coaches Tasha Butts and Tony Perotti are all Tennessee alumni and were all part of the Tennessee women's basketball program.
Caldwell, who was raised in Oak Ridge, TN, was a player and coach at the University of Tennessee. She played under head coach Pat Summitt from 1991-94 and won a NCAA Championship in 1991. She also won NCAA titles with the Lady Vols as an assistant coach in 2007 and 2008.
Butts played at Tennessee from 2000-04 and helped the Lady Vols to a 124-17 overall and 55-1 conference record in her four seasons. She played in the national championship games in both her junior and senior seasons.
Perotti is a 1999 Tennessee graduate and was a practice player for the Lady Vols for two seasons. He also worked at the university as a summer camp coach and office assistant.
UCLA battled back from a seven-point first half deficit to defeat Princeton 69-59. Freshman Markel Walker led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Moniquee Alexander added 15 points and 11 boards.
Princeton led 31-29 at the half, but a 10-2 UCLA run early in the second half, put the Bruins up 43-39 with 13:13 to play. UCLA built the lead up to eight points at 51-43, but saw PU battle back to get within two at 54-52 with 5:15 remaining. A pair of Erica Tukiainen three-point shots helped the Bruins pull away down the stretch.
Threes Are Wild
UCLA has made 31 threes so far this season in its first five games. Last season, the Bruins did not reach that figure until game 11.
Erica Tukiainen has 18 of the Bruin three-point shots and has made 18 of her 25 (72 %) three-point attempts this season. She is now shooting 40.9% (72-176) for her career from beyond the arc. Her 72 career three-point shots rank as the 10th best total in school history.
