Cal Reaches Highest Spot of Season in BCS Standings at No. 19
Nov. 29, 2009
BERKELEY - Cal (8-3, 5-3 Pac-10) will head into its regular-season finale at Washington (4-7, 3-5 Pac-10) this Saturday, Dec. 5 (3:30 p.m. PT) with its highest BCS ranking of the season at No. 19. The Golden Bears are also ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press Top 25, while checking in at No. 22 in the USA Today poll.
The Golden Bears have won five of their last six games overall and are coming off a bye last Saturday after having defeated Arizona and Stanford the previous two Saturdays. The back-to-back victories in consecutive weeks over ranked opponents marked the first time the Bears had accomplished the feat in 59 years since home wins over Washington and UCLA on Nov. 11 and Nov. 18, 1950.
Cal had been listed as high as No. 20 in the BCS Standings previously, reaching that spot on Nov. 1 before a loss to Oregon State six days later. The Golden Bears were ranked as high as No. 6 by both AP and USA Today on Sept. 20 after opening the season with a 3-0 mark following a No. 12 preseason ranking in both.
The top six teams in this week's BCS Standings - Florida (.9868 BCS average), Alabama (.9513), Texas (.9282), TCU (.8689), Cincinnati (.8547) and Boise State (.8096) - are all undefeated and unchanged from last week. The group also makes up the top six teams in this week's AP Top 25 rankings and USA Today poll with the only change Texas ranking ahead of Alabama in the latter.
No. 7 Oregon (.7343) is the first of five Pac-10 teams listed in the latest BCS Standings, followed by No. 16 Oregon State (.4070), No. 18 USC (.3565), No. 19 Cal (.2392) and No. 24 Stanford (.1198).
Cal's 2009 regular-season finale at Washington will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet California and Fox SportsNet Northwest.
