Wrestling Dominates Simon Fraser and Pacific with Shut Outs

Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team racked up 11 falls en route to a pair of dominating shut outs over Simon Fraser, 47-0, and Pacific (Ore.), 55-0, on Sunday afternoon in legendary Gill Coliseum.

 

Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) at 125 pounds and sophomores No. 17 Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) at 133 pounds and No. 18 Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) at heavyweight recorded pins in both of their bouts. And senior No. 18 Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) earned a pair of technical falls at 157 pounds.

Oregon State quickly got off to a big start, picking up falls over its first two opponents. Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway, City, Calif.) and sophomore 17th-ranked Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) combined to pin their opponents in 2:31 at 125 and 133 pounds.

 

Nineteenth-ranked redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) and freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) earned decisions at 141 and 149 pounds to boost the team score to 18-0 after four bouts.

 

Senior 18th-ranked Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) added more bonus points to the team score with a technical fall over Max Arcand at 157 pounds with sophomore Ryan Smith (Prineville, Ore.) earning a 1-0 decision at 165 pounds over Pano Dreaves.

 

Junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) earned the third fall for the team at 174 pounds, followed by a decision by junior Brice Arand (Springfield, Ore.) and major decision by Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) at 197 pounds. Eighteenth-ranked sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) closed the meet in pinning fashion, tallying the fall in 3:40 over Gurdeep Beesla.

 

“I thought we did a good job in the first meet,” head coach Jim Zalesky said. “I thought there were a couple of situations that we could have scored more, but overall I think we did a good job. There were a few matches with a lull, but the wrestler picked it up in the end.”

 

Two team points were awarded to Oregon State based on forfeits at 125 and 197 pounds, and the matches wrestled were declared exhibition matches.

Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway, City, Calif.) and 17th-ranked sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) did it again in the second meet of the day, pinning their opponents in 1:28 this time.

 

Adding more bonus points, 19th-ranked Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) earned a major decision at 141 pounds, followed by freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) earning a pin of his own in 1:58 over Kody Kramer.

 

Senior 18th-ranked Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) tallied his second technical fall of the day with sophomore Ryan Smith (Prineville, Ore.) also earning one at 165 pounds.

 

Then the falls continued beginning with juniors Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) and Brice Arand (Springfield, Ore.) at 184 pounds, who finished in 35 seconds. Sophomore Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) and No. 18 sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) cleaned up with pins of their own with Jack owning the fastest pin of the day, tallying the win in 11 seconds over Chris McLinden at heavyweight.

 

“We scored a lot today with a lot of falls,” head coach Jim Zalesky said. “These teams may have been overmatched somewhat, but we worked on some things that we needed to work on in competition.”
