California's Cutura Named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Year

Nov. 30, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- CALIFORNIA senior outside hitter Hana Cutura has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Year, UCLA setter Lauren Cook has been honored as the Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, and WASHINGTON STATE’s Andrew Palileo has been named Pacific-10 Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR -- HANA CUTURA, CALIFORNIA
Cutura, a three-time All-Pac-10 selection, becomes the first California player in Pac-10 history to earn the honor. An outside hitter from Zagreb, Croatia, Cutura led the Pac-10 in kills (5.09 kps) and points (5.59 pps), and was tenth in hitting percentage (.313). She helped the Golden Bears post a 18-10 record overall and a 11-7 league mark, while leading Cal to its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Cutura has recorded a school record 1,931 kills during her career.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- LAUREN COOK, UCLA
Cook, setter from Lincoln, Neb., is the fifth UCLA player to earn Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors. She helped guide the Bruins to their 11th consecutive 20-win season and 28th NCAA Tournament appearance. She averaged 10.62 assists per set, but upped those numbers to 11.10 per set in Pac-10 play.

COACH OF THE YEAR -- ANDREW PALILEO, WASHINGTON STATE
Andrew Palileo has been named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year after guiding Washington State to an 18-12 record, and a 6-12 record in Pac-10 play. It’s the first winning season for the Cougars since 2002, and the six league victories are the most since the 2002 season as well. The Cougars were rewarded with their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002. This is the first time Palileo has been tabbed Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Palileo has a career record of 267-172 (.608) in 13 seasons, including a record of 28-31 (.475) in two seasons at Washington State.
