Sophomore California native, Whitney French is a great asset to the Oregon State women's golf team. She started strong as a freshman in the 2008-09 season appearing in all ten tournaments and ending the season with a 77.87 scoring average. Half way through the 2009-10 season she is continuing to improve and here future at Oregon State looks bright.

What helped in your decision to come to Oregon State?

'I really wanted to stay in the Pac-10 because it is the best competition one can get for golf. And so when I went on my recruiting trip here I was hooked and fell in love with the campus and the people here in Corvallis. It was probably one of the easiest decisions I have ever made I knew right away I wanted to go to OSU.'

Do you have any talents most might not know about?

'I wouldn't say they were talents but I played three different sports in high school, golf, soccer, and softball. Also, during that time I was playing club soccer and travel softball so I was on a total of five teams. Also, I can bend my left thumb backwards so the tip of my thumb is flat.'

What is the number one played song on your iTunes?

'Anything by Taylor Swift, I like to listen to her songs while I am practicing golf because mellow songs allow me to have a good tempo with my swing.'

What are some of your favorite movies?

'I love funny movies, like The Hangover, Caddyshack, Happy Gilmore, The Proposal, and the Ugly Truth.'

What was your first job?

'I have never had a job. Our deal in our house is that if you are playing a sport you do not have to get a job because that time you would be working should be spent on athletics.'

What has been your favorite class at Oregon State so far?

'My favorite class so far was Native American Flute by Jan Michael. This is a class where not a lot of thinking goes on and after a long day of school and practice it is nice to just show up to class and play some music. You also get to listen to life stories and learn many life lessons, which cannot be taught out of a book.'

What kind of golf clubs do you use?

'I use Nike Victory Red irons, the same as Tiger Woods. I use Ping G10 Driver, hybrid clubs and G15 5wood and 3wood. I have titlist wedges and an odyssey putter.'

Who is your favorite OSU athlete and why?

'My favorite OSU athlete is Leslie Mak. She is on the gymnastics team. She is a hard working, great athlete, friendly girl who I befriended last year. She had an amazing freshman year and accomplished many things. And I thought for being a freshman on a high ranked team and coming on top for an event was amazing.'

How did you find out you were going to play in the New Mexico Tournament and what was it like once you got there?

'The team left on early Saturday morning. I went to the football game that day and I get a text message from my coaches saying to be ready because I might be flying out there. There was no explanation or anything and I had no idea what was going on. So later that night I get a call from my assistant coach saying that she is booking a flight for me and I leave at 8:00am the next day. I was really excited because I thought they were just allowed to take another player, later on I found out that one of our girls was sick. So the next day I wake up at 4:00am to catch the hut shuttle, fly out of PDX and fly down to New Mexico where my assistant coach picked me up. I then caught up with my teammates on the back nine of their practice round. Still a little puzzled of what I had just gone through in less than twenty-four hours; I played the next few days and finish second on my team.'
