Cal Men's Swimming Day Two Highlights at Short Course Nationals

The Cal men's swimming program had several solid performances Friday (Dec. 4) in day two of the 2009 AT&T Short Course National Championships, held at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. Top highlights included the Golden Bears' relay team of junior Guy Barnea, sophomore Nolan Koon, junior Graeme Moore and junior Nathan Adrian placing second in the 200 medley relay (1:26.16), and Adrian finishing third in the 100 butterfly (46.62).
Cal also had a fourth place finish in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:37.45 (NCAA B standard) behind swims from freshman Tom Shields, freshman Nick Trowbridge, senior Aaron Casey and freshman Ben Hinshaw.
Along with Adrian's third-place finish in the 100 fly, Cal had three other swimmers post NCAA B standards in that event. Shields placed eighth with a time of 47.46, sophomore Mathias Gydesen won the B Final with a time of 47.82 and Moore was 10th with a mark of 48.20.
In the 400 IM final, Casey notched a fifth place finish with a time of 3:54.43 after swimming a 3:53.40 in the prelims (NCAA B standard). Hinshaw ended up capturing the 400 IM B Final with a time of 3:51.98. Koon placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke as well, posting a time of 54.28 (NCAA B standard).
In the finals of the 100 backstroke, Barnea finished sixth with an NCAA B standard time of 47.75, while Gydesen was seventh with a 48.27 (NCAA B standard).
A couple of former Cal swimmers performed well Friday. Freestyler Will Copeland (2005-08) was second in the 200 free (1:35.02) and backstroke specialist David Russell (2006-09) was fourth in the 100 back (46.24).
On Thursday, the Bears' 200 free relay (Adrian, Moore, Barnea, junior Josh Daniels), placed first with a time of 1:18.13, while Adrian captured the 50 free with a mark of 19.08. Cal also placed first and second in the 400 medley relay. The Bears' top squad of Barnea, Koon, Moore and Adrian won the race with a time of 3:11.00, and Cal's B Team of Gydesen, junior Nick Ferrif, Shields and Daniels swam a 3:13.65.
The Short Course Nationals concludes Saturday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and finals beginning at 5 p.m.
The Bear divers are also competing this week. On Friday at the Texas Invitational, junior Thomas Henninger placed seventh on the three-meter board with a score of 321.30, and sophomore Bobby Sullivan finished ninth with a 255.20 in the morning prelims. On Thursday, Henninger had placed ninth in the one-meter competition after scoring 262.70 in the preliminaries, and Sullivan was 11th with a 230.85. The Texas Invitational diving concludes Saturday.
