Swimming & Diving Announces National Letter-of-Intent Signees

Swim coach Cyndi Gallagher and dive coach Tom Stebbins have announced the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent for the 2010-2011 school year. Joining the Bruins next fall are Lauren Baker, Jessica Bergman, Cynthia Fascella, Paulina Guzman, Haley McNamara, Kathryn Murphy and Emily Weir.
Lauren Baker (Tucson AZ/Canyon Del ORO HS) was the 2009 Southern Arizona Swimmer of the Year and the Arizona 4A Division I High School Swimmer of the Year. Baker won state titles in the 100 fly and 200 IM in 2009. She was also a two-time Scholastic All-American with 4.0 honors. Her high school has given her MVP honors on four occasions and she is an All-American in the 100 fly and 200 IM.
Jessica Bergman (Sunnyvale, CA/Homestead HS) is an All-American in the 100 back, 50 free, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay, as well as a Scholastic All-American. She is a three-time CCS finalist and school record-holder in the 50 free and 100 back. Bergman was also a four-year letterwinner on the water polo team and was a relay swimmer at the U.S. Open.
Cynthia Fascella (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley HS) was the Orange County Register's Swimmer of the Year in 2008 and has won six CIF Div. I titles in individual events and relays. She is a three-time CIF Masters champion in multiple events and was the Fountain Valley HS Girls Swim MVP on three occasions. Fascella was also a finalist for the Coronet Award (given annually to the top athlete at Fountain Valley HS) and was a member of the CIF record-breaking 200 free relay.
Paulina Guzman (Lakewood, CA/Millikan HS) is a three-time CIF champion and two-time Masters champion in diving. She has earned All-American honors on three occasions and is a seven-time National Meet qualifier. Since 2007, Guzman has represented Guatemala at the international level and was a Junior PanAm Games finalist on 1M and 3M in 2009. Guzman also received the Century Club Award for Athlete of the Year and was a member of the Long Beach Press Telegram's 'Dream Team.'
Haley McNamara (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo HS) is a diver who hails from the same school as All-American and 2009 graduate Tess Schofield. She is a three-time Junior National champion and five-time Junior National team member. McNamara is a 12-time National Meet qualifier, two-time CIF champion, three-time All-American and four-time Junior International silver medalist.
Kathryn Murphy (Novato, CA/Marin Catholic HS) was a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier in the 50 free and a 2009 NCSA Junior National champion in the 50 free. In 2008, she won both the 50 and 100 free crowns at the California North Coast Sectional. Murphy has one the Marin County Athletic League 50 and 100 free titles the past three years and holds league records in both events. She also holds school records in the 50, 100 and 200 free at her high school and was the team's MVP in 2007 and 2009. She was named the Marin County Swimmer of the Year in 2008 and was honored as the Swimmer of the Year for 15-16 year olds by Pacific Swimming in 2008.
Emily Weir (Riverside, CT/Greenwich HS) is a six-time state champion, five-time All-American, four-time All-American consideration and holds four Connecticut state records in the 100 breast. She was a finalist in the 100 breast at the Long Course Junior Nationals and was the YMCA Short Course National Champion in the 100 breast. Weir has served as a team captain for her high school and was named the Most Valuable Senior and Junior.
