Cougar Women Hand Wyoming First Loss of 2009-10
Dec. 5, 2009
PULLMAN - Led by a trio of double-digit scorers, the Washington State University women's basketball team knocked off previously-unbeaten Wyoming 63-50 Saturday at Friel Court. The Cougars improved to 3-4 on the season, while the Cowgirls dropped to 7-1.
Sophomore guard Jazmine Perkins led WSU for the second-straight game, scoring 17 points. Sophomore guard April Cook added 16, and freshman guard KiKi Moore chipped in 11. Moore has scored in double figures in each of her first seven games as a Cougar, and Cook has scored 10-plus in 17-straight dating back to her freshman season.
'I thought we took a step forward both offensively and defensively,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'We pressured almost the entire game, forcing time off the clock and making Wyoming take tough shots. It was exciting to see our defense come back to Beasley.'
Wyoming entered today's game shooting 44.9 percent from the floor on the season, but went just 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) against the Cougars. At 7-0 entering today's game, the Cowgirls were off to their best start in 31 years.
After allowing Saint Mary's to shoot 68.2 percent (15-of-22) in the first half Thursday, including 87.5 (7-of-8) percent from the 3-point line, the Cougar defense stepped up against the Cowgirls in the opening half. WSU held Wyoming to 14 first-half points, and the Cowgirls were held without a 3-point field goal in seven attempts.
The Cougars entered intermission with a 13-point lead (27-14), and built as much as a 20-point advantage in the second half. Though the Cowgirls were able to cut their lead to single digits in the opening minutes of the second period, it was as close as they would get. WSU led by 10-plus for the final 16-minutes, 31-seconds.
Moore led the Cougars with eight rebounds and four assists, while sophomore forward Rosie Tarnowski recorded a team-high three steals. WSU outrebounded Wyoming 43-39, and recorded 14 assists to just 13 turnovers.
The Cougars hit the road once again next week, travelling to Bozeman, Mont., to face Montana State Friday (Dec. 11). Tip-off against the Bobcats is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Worthington Arena.
