Hosszu, Anderson, Soni All Win U.S. Titles

Sophomore Katinka Hosszu, freshman Haley Anderson and 2009 graduate Rebecca Soni all won titles on the final day of the 2009 AT&T Short Course National Championships on Saturday (Dec. 5) at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Hosszu won the 200y fly title in an NCAA `A' cut of 1:53.37, edging U.S. Olympic gold medalist Dana Vollmer (1:53.59). Hosszu, less than a second off of the school record of 1:52.63 set by Kaitlin Sandeno, overcame a hair of a deficit on the final 50 yards for the win. Trojan junior Lyndsay DePaul took third in 1:54.94, another NCAA `A' cut, while sophomore Tanya Krisman crashed the final party with an eighth in 1:59.99, a strong NCAA `B' cut.
Anderson, a 2009 U.S. World Championships team member, won the 1650y free in 16:05.27, an NCAA `B' cut. She held off Lauren Boyle, who finished second in 16:07.21. Junior Ellie Doran was sixth in 16:28.44, also good for a personal-best and NCAA `B' cut.
Soni won her second title in as many days, taking the 200y breast in 2:05.12, not far off of her American record set in February (2:04.75), also in Federal Way. She won comfortably over second-place Annamay Pierse (2:07.62). Freshman Jessica Schmitt posted an NCAA `B' cut of 2:14.12 in prelims.
Senior Dina Hegazy reached the final of the 200y back thanks to a strong 1:56.77 (NCAA `B' cut) in prelims. She took seventh in finals in 1:58.39. Freshman Lili Shiota clocked a 1:57.64 in the B final, an NCAA consideration time. Freshman James Lendrum also reached the final of the men's 200y back, going 1:46.04, taking eighth. He went 1:45.24 in prelims, an NCAA `B' cut.
Freshman Clement Lefert finished fourth in the 200y fly in 1:45.59 while Josh Joiner was seventh in the final in 1:46.68. Both were NCAA `B' cuts. Junior Dillon Connolly, seventh in the 100y breast, took eighth in the 200y breast in 1:59.31.
Sophomore Jeff Daniels made his first final of the event by finishing eighth in prelims in 44.11, an NCAA `B' cut. He improved upon the time in the final, going 43.94 (taking eighth again).
USC's women's 400y free relay of DePaul, Hosszu and freshmen Christel Simms and Kate Shumway finished second in an NCAA `B' cut of 3:20.74. The men's relay of Daniels, Lefert, Patrick White and Emmett Walling were also second in 2:56.61, another `B' cut.
