Hawai'i, ranked No. 3 in the most recent AVCA poll and seeded 12th in the NCAA Tournament, enters the regional with a 30-2 record overall. The Rainbow Wahine were 16-0 in the Western Athletic Conference and captured the regular season championship for the 14th straight year. UH also won its 10th consecutive WAC Tournament title in 2009. The Rainbow Wahine knocked off New Mexico (3-0) and No. 15 USC (3-1) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles.
Illinois comes into the regional with a No. 8 ranking in the latest AVCA poll and the tournament's No. 5 overall seed. The Fighting Illini are 26-5 on the season and competing in an NCAA regional for the 11th time in school history. Illinois finished second in the Big Ten, behind undefeated and two-time defending national champion Penn State. The Illini defeated IPFW (3-0) and Dayton (3-1) in Champaign, Ill., last weekend.
Michigan, ranked No. 16 by the AVCA and the No. 13 overall seed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament, is 24-9 overall and advancing to a regional semifinal for the third consecutive season. The Wolverines went 12-8 in the Big ten and tied for fourth-place with Ohio State. UM swept Niagara in the first round before coming back from an 0-2 deficit against Ohio to secure a 3-2 win in Ann Arbor in the second round.
No. 4 Stanford, also the tournament's No. 4 overall seed, advances to its fourth straight regional semifinal with a 23-7 overall record. The Cardinal won its fourth consecutive Pac-10 Championship this season with a 14-4 conference record. Stanford is one of only two schools to have appeared in ever NCAA Tournament since the NCAA Championships began in 1981 (Penn State is the other programs to appear in all 29 events). The Cardinal took care of business against Long Island (3-0) in the first round before holding off Saint Mary's (3-2) in the second round at Maples Pavilion.
The 2009 season will mark the second time in three years that Stanford will play host to NCAA regional action, as the Cardinal hosted the 2007 Stanford Regional. The Cardinal defeated Cal Poly and UCLA to advance to the Final Four in Sacramento that season.
Other host sites in 2009 include Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn., Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., and Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainsville, Fla.
The event will mark the 13th time in school history that Stanford will host an NCAA volleyball regional.
The 2009 NCAA Volleyball Championships take place Dec. 17-19 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.
