UCLA Gymnastics Team Ranked No. 5 In Preseason Coaches Poll

Dec. 8, 2009

The UCLA gymnastics team will open the 2010 season ranked No. 5 in the preseason coaches poll. The Bruins are one of five teams to collect first-place votes, receiving two. UCLA finished seventh overall at last year's NCAA Championships.

Head coach Valorie Kondos Field returns five All-Americans in senior Anna Li, juniors Brittani McCullough and Niki Tom and freshmen Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs and Vanessa Zamarripa. Also back are All-Pac-10 honorees Mizuki Sato and Aisha Gerber. In addition, UCLA welcomes a talented freshman class, led by two-time World Championships competitor Lichelle Wong and former junior international elite Monique De La Torre.

UCLA will face seven of the Top 25 teams in the polls this season, including No. 1 Georgia in Athens on Mar. 6 and No. 2 Utah in the season opener in Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 9. Also on tap are meets against No. 7 Stanford (Jan. 24 at Stanford, Feb. 14 at UCLA), No. 10 Oregon State (Feb. 21 at home), No. 20 Arizona (Feb. 5 in Tucson), No. 24 Michigan State (Mar. 14 at home) and No. 25 Washington (Jan. 15 in Seattle).

The Bruins' first event of the season will take place this Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 pm at the Southern California College Preview at Cal State Fullerton. The event is a showcase and meet-and-greet with the Cal State Fullerton gymnastics squad. Olympic champion Nastia Liukin will be a special guest at the event. Tickets are $10, and all proceeds will go towards the Titan Gymnastics program.
