Beavers Receive Official Welcome to Vegas
Dec. 10, 2009
LAS VEGAS - Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley, Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis and quarterback Sean Canfield met with members of the Las Vegas media Thursday morning at the ESPN Zone inside the New York-New York Hotel on the famed Las Vegas Strip in which the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas officially welcomed BYU (10-2/7-1 Mountain West) and Oregon State (8-4/6-3 Pac-10).
The event marks the start of activities leading up to the Tuesday, Dec. 22 showdown between the Beavers and Cougars at Sam Boyd Stadium that will feature the first-ever matchup of ranked teams in the annual event. ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach recently choose the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas as the 7th-best bowl matchup of the year.
The game will be televised by ESPN with Rece Davis (play-by-play), Lou Holts and Mark May (analysts) and Quint Kessenich (sideline reporter). The game will also be broadcast nationally on the Sports USA Radio Network and along the Armed Forces Radio Network.
The Beavers are playing in a bowl game for the ninth time in the last 11 years, which ties for the second-most over that span in the Pac-10 with USC.
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Mike Riley
'It is great to be here. I like playing against people that I know. If you do this for a long time you get the opportunity to do that once in a while, and (BYU head coach) Bronco (Mendenhall) is a great guy, has a great program and we have gotten to know each other the past couple of years. I really appreciate their program and what they have been able to do.'
'I am also very proud to bring the Beavers back to Vegas. We were here a few years ago and they do a great job. It was fun for our team, the atmosphere was great and we appreciated that.'
'Our team was somewhat of a mystery to me going into the year. We lost a lot of good players from last year. I don't know if I have ever been more proud of a group. We had a couple bumps early, but we played well early on and they kept working and our coaches kept coaching and we did get better.'
'I think this is a great matchup to play BYU and for our team to get a chance to do that I think is awesome. We are looking forward to it.'
OREGON STATE QUARTERBACK Sean Canfield
'On behalf of my teammates, we are excited to be playing a quality opponent in BYU. The last time we were here we were able to take down, with a minute and nineteen seconds left, UNLV. No hard feelings if you were in the stadium, was just doing my job.'
'We couldn't be more excited and are looking forward to playing a really good opponent in BYU.'
