Dec. 10, 2009
BERKELEY - Former California defender Tyler Barry was invited to the 2010 Major League Soccer Combine to be held from Jan. 9-13 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., MLS announced on Thursday. Barry, who completed his college career with the 2008 season, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury midway through 2008 and was not a viable candidate to attend the 2009 MLS Combine.
'It's been a long recovery process for Tyler coming off his knee injury last year,' Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. 'We're so happy and excited to see him get a chance to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional player. Tyler was having a great season in 2008 before his injury. It is nice to see him get recognized for his stellar play the four years he was here at Cal.'
Barry is one of 62 mostly current college seniors from 44 Division I schools with a spot on the initial list of invitees to the combine, which will end two days before the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. A member of the 2008 NSCAA Far West All-Region and All-Pac-10 teams, Barry was an integral member of the backline and started all 11 games he played in last year before his ACL injury cut short his final season. He played in 72 games and collected four goals and one assist during his Cal career.
This fall, Barry returned to Cal to complete his major in legal studies. Recently, Barry has been training in Argentina to prepare for the MLS Combine. He is at the Centro de Entrenamiento para Futbolistas de Alto Rendimiento or CEFAR, a Buenos Aires-based training center for elite-level soccer players. César Luis Menotti, the former Argentine national team coach, coaches at CEFAR.
In other Cal/MLS news, former Golden Bear Andrew Jacobson, previously a member of D.C. United, was selected by the Philadelphia Union, an MLS expansion team, in the Nov. 25 expansion draft. He played in 17 MLS games and earned eight league starts for D.C. United. He appeared in 28 games and made 17 starts in all games for United. Prior to joining MLS, Jacobson spent the 2008 season with FC Lorient in France's Ligue 1.
