Four Pac-10 Baseball Players Named 2010 Preseason NCBWA All-Americans

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA STATE senior starting pitcher Josh Spence and sophomore relief pitcher Mitchell Lambson, OREGON STATE sophomore starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio and UCLA sophomore starting pitcher Trevor Bauer were recently named to the 10th-Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pro-Line Athletic Preseason All-America team.
The Sun Devils’ Spence earned a first team selection while Lambson was chosen a third team honoree. Last season, Spence (10-1, 2.37 ERA, 125 strikeouts in 102.2 innings) and Lambson (9-5, 3.01 ERA, 99 strikeouts in 83-plus innings) led ASU to its third-consecutive Pac-10 Championship, an overall record of 51-14, marking the first 50-win season since 2003 and 17th in school history, as well as advancing to the program’s 21st trip to the NCAA College World Series.
A second team selection, Oregon State’s Gaviglio (10-1, 2.73, 55 whiffs in just under 63 frames) led the Beavers to their fourth trip to the NCAA Regional in the past five years last season. His 10 wins in 2009 is believed to be a school record for most wins by a freshman, tying for second in the Pac-10 in wins. His 2.73 ERA was the best amongst the team’s starters during the regular season.
The reigning Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Bauer was tabbed a third team honoree. He posted a 9-3 record with a 2.99 ERA and registered 92 strikeouts with two saves in a team-high 105.1 innings pitched. He led the Bruins to a 15-12 mark in Pac-10 play, tying for third place in the Conference.
The 2010 campaign gets underway on Friday, February 19, when Arizona State takes on Northern Illinois at 6:30 p.m. MST, Oregon State traveling to Hawaii for a game at 7:35 p.m. HT and UCLA hosting Southern in the MLB Urban Invitational with first pitch slated at 6:00 p.m. PT.
