Gymnasts Build for Habitat for Humanity
Dec. 18, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. -
Sports teams often talk of building a foundation, but the Stanford women's gymnastics team actually did something about it, building a foundation for a house in Daly City.
Working with the Greater San Francisco Habitat for Humanity, the Cardinal gymnasts worked on a two-house site. Half of a crew that included gymnasts, coaches and a trainer did interior work on one house that already was framed and walled. The other half braved the rain while putting down rebar and reinforcing the foundation of the other.
Construction began in mid-October with a goal of having families move in in May. The team learned much about how the building codes are designed to make houses as earthquake resistant as possible.
It was hard and dirty work, but an invaluable experience.
