Corvallis, Ore. – The No. 25 Oregon State wrestling team won 18 of its bouts en route to a 40-3 win over Southern Oregon and 43-3 win over Air Force, tallying bonus point wins in 13 of those wins with five pins on Friday evening at Crescent Valley High School.

Five different Beaver wrestlers earned falls for the team with two coming against the Raiders and three against the Falcons.

The Beavers improve to 8-1 in duals this season, winning the last seven straight. Southern Oregon is now 4-3. And Air Force is now 1-3.

Oregon State has the week off before heading to Evanston, Ill., to compete in the Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern. The two-day tournament begins on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Southern Oregon 3, Oregon State 40

Freshman 16th-ranked RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) and senior 18th-ranked Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) wrapped up the meet for No. 25 Oregon State with two decisive pins at 149 and 157 pounds, boosting the Beavers to a 40-3 win over Southern Oregon.

“I thought overall we wrestled well,” head coach Jim Zalesky said. “Southern Oregon is a good NAIA school, and I thought our last five wrestlers were better than our first five overall. But I thought we had a good week of practice, especially going into winter break, but overall, I thought we wrestled well.”

In his first dual match of the season, senior Dan Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.) started things out at 165 pounds with a major decision over Tommie Hooper, 16-4, with junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) quickly following with a major decision of his own at 174 pounds over Austin Vanderford.

Sophomore heavyweight Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) scored bonus points on a Raider forfeit to put the Beavers ahead, 17-3, before the intermission. Eighteenth-ranked 125-pounder Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) added to the lead with his decision over Mitchell Lofstedt at 125 pounds. Sophomore 16th-ranked Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) moved to 3-0 on the season in technical falls with a 22-7 win as time expired over Brian Jacob.

“I liked how we wrestled in this meet,” head coach Jim Zalesky said. “We used our hands more and were more physical. We’ve been stressing the importance of being more physical as the season goes on. A good example was Colby Covington, who had a hard match, but turned what looked to be a decision into a major decision. And matches like that give guys confidence as the season goes on.”

Brascetta earned his fifth fall of the season early in the second period over Joseph Stafford, while Jack and Vinson both recorded their pins late in the first period, just over the two-minute mark.

Five other Oregon State wrestlers recorded bonus point victories beginning with 18th-ranked redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) at 125 pounds and 16th-ranked sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) at 133 pounds, who both chalked up 16-7 major decisions over their opponents.

Sixteenth-ranked freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) and 18th-ranked senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) teamed up again to earn a pair of technical falls, scoring back points quickly and early at 149 and 157 pounds. And junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) wrapped things up with the final bonus point win at 174 pounds with a 20-8 major decision over Tyler French.
