Steve Johnson Helps USA Win In France

Dec. 18, 2009

USC sophomore Steve Johnson got a taste of international tennis action this month with a trip to France to represent the United States at the 2009 Master'U BNP Paribas. Competing alongside fellow U.S. collegiate all-stars, Johnson and his Team USA teammates powered the United State to three wins for a first-place finish at the eight-country tournament held in Poitiers, France.

Johnson was selected to the U.S. collegiate all-star team by the USTA thanks to the USC sophomore's powerful first year as a Trojan and an outstanding fall 2009 season. Johnson reached the singles semifinals at the 2009 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in October, and also won the All-American doubles title for the second straight season with teammate Robert Farah. During the 2008-09 season, Johnson was named an ITA All-American in singles and doubles and was also selected to the All Pac-10 First Team. A month before departing for France with the U.S. team, Johnson won the ITA National Indoor Championship singles crown to add to the sophomore's impressive fall showing.

In France, Johnson and his U.S. teammates first clashed with Switzerland, and Johnson teamed up with Eric Quigley of Kentucky in men's doubles play. Johnson/Quigley got a 6-4, 6-4 win to help propel Team USA to a final 7-0 win over the Swiss. Next was a semifinal matchup against No. 3 seed Great Britain, which the United State took down 5-1 thanks in part to a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 singles win from Johnson. In the final against No. 2 seeded host France, Johnson fell in singles but notched a 6-4, 6-4 win in doubles playing with Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek to help push the top-seeded United States to a 4-3 win and secure the title at the 2009 Master'U BNP Paribas.

The eight-team 2009 Master'U BNP Paribas included collegiate players on teams from the USA, France, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, China, Belgium and Ireland
