MANCHESTER, England - Former California standout Dana Vollmer and the United States team defeated a European all-star team in the 2009 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool on Saturday at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. At the end of the two-day meet, the U.S. women beat the European women by a score of 90-41, while the combined U.S. men's and women's team easily topped the Europeans, 185-78. Vollmer, the 2009 Honda Sports Award winner for swimming, raced in three events on Saturday, including in the 400-meter freestyle relay, which the United States won with an American-record time of 3:28.89.

The Granbury, Texas, product swam the anchor leg of the U.S. relay, which trailed the Europeans by more than one second after three legs. But Vollmer's strong swim against Great Britain's backstroke specialist Elizabeth Simmonds allowed the United States to top the Europeans (3:29.90) by more than one second.

Vollmer also placed second in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:05.34 and fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.91.
