USC Women Dominate In 78-46 Win over Dartmouth
Dec. 19, 2009
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's basketball team put up its toughest defensive effort of the season to open the fourth annual Women of Troy Basketball Classic, pinning up a 78-46 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at the Galen Center. Led by 18-point outings from Heather Oliver and Ashley Corral, the Trojan offense charged ahead while the defense clamped down and allowed a season-low 17 field goals and a new low of 27.9 percent shooting from the Big Green. USC improves to 5-4 overall with the win, while Dartmouth goes to 2-6.
USC finished out the game shooting 48 percent from the field and got double-digit scoring from Corral and Oliver's 18 points along with 10 points from Briana Gilbreath, while Aarika Hughes pulled down 10 rebounds for the Trojans. Dartmouth finished ahead of USC on the boards overall, 40-37, but it was the Trojans' hot hands from the floor and defensive prowess that proved the advantage for USC. USC forced 20 Dartmouth turnovers and racked up 19 assists in the game to match a season-high, led by five assists from Corral and Hailey Dunham. Dartmouth was led in scoring by Betsy Williams, who hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points, and got 13 rebounds from Sasha Dosenko.
The Women of Troy pulled out of a slow start that saw USC holding a 12-8 lead on the way into the 10-minute mark by heating up their offense while staying stubborn on the defensive end. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Ashley Corral and a pair of free throws nailed by Heather Oliver carried the Trojans ahead by 20 later in the half, and USC was up 38-18 by the buzzer. USC finished the half shooting 47 percent from the floor while holding the Big Green to 22 percent.
Dartmouth had the lead on the boards 22-21 at the half, but USC upped its pressure in the second half to press farther ahead. USC forced four early turnovers in the first two minutes and converted at the other end to move up 47-18. The Trojan defensive pressure induced a shot clock violation by Dartmouth next, and a bucket from Kari LaPlante made it 49-18 USC to make it an 11-0 run. A free throw from the Big Green ended the streak, but the Trojans got right back into gear when Ashley Corral drained her fourth 3-pointer of the day.
Dartmouth's first field goals of the half came with a three from Betsy Williams at 15:50 and a score in the paint from Jalea Moses. But Daniela Roark got in on the 3-point action for USC with a long one next, and Oliver would nail her third soon after to bump USC ahead 58-26 at 13:50. Another USC hot streak in which Oliver and Roark nailed repeat threes and Gilbreath slipped in a fadeaway jumper carried USC to a 71-31 lead just past the 10-minute mark. Hughes ripped down her 10th rebound of the night, and Oliver joined Corral with 18 points on the day soon after. Dartmouth managed some late scores to cut into the Trojan lead, and the game finished out as a 78-46 victory for the Women of Troy.
USC now moves into the championship game of the Women of Troy Classic, facing the winner of tonight's Cal State Bakersfield and Delaware State game at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow (Dec. 20) at the Galen Center.
