Giesen Wins 184-Pound Title, Stanford Finishes 11th At Reno Tournament Of Champions

RENO, Nev. - Junior Zack Giesen captured the 184-pound title after going 4-0 at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Sunday, in Reno, Nev. As a team, Stanford finished 11th with 43.5 points.

Sophomore Nick Amuchasetgui was Stanford's other placer at the tournament, finishing third at 165 pounds. Overall, Stanford won 23 of its 38 matches on the day.

Giesen claims his second tournament title of the season after taking first at the Fullerton Open on Nov. 21. He began the tournament with a 12-4 major decision over Evan Hinebauch of Montana State Northern. He then defeated North Carolina's Nick Tenpenny, 7-1, and Penn State's David Erwin, 10-8 before edging Nick Purdue of Ohio with a 5-4 win in the championship match. Giesen is now 12-1 overall on the season.

Amucastegui started the tournament with a 13-2 major decision over Caanan Towns (UC-Upper Iowa). The Talent, Ore., native then posted decisions over Eastern Michigan's Alex Ortman, 7-1, and West Virginia's Donnie Jones, 9-5, before suffering his first loss of the season to Jarrod King of Edinboro, 12-4. He bounced back with two more decisions in the consolation bracket to place third. Overall, Amuchastegui stands at 15-1 on the year.

Senior Jake Johnson (4-2), junior Lucas Espericueta (3-2) and freshman Ryan Mango (3-2) all tallied winning records on the day, while junior Justin Paulsen finished 2-2.

Oklahoma State finished first with 154.0 points, while Edinboro (85.5), Penn State (83.0), Arizona State (77.0) and Ohio (77.0) round out the top-5. Out of 25 teams, all seven of the Pac-10 teams competing at the tournament finished in the top-14.

Stanford returns to action Dec. 29-30 as it takes part in the Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Ill.
