UCLA (5-4) will battle the St. Mary's Gaels (9-4) on Monday at Noon in Pauley Pavilion before taking a short break for the Holidays. The Bruins will return to action on Monday, Dec. 28 to play their final non-conference matchup against LMU (5-5) at 7 p.m. in Pauley.
The Bruins came up short against Texas Tech on Friday and dropped a 59-58 decision. Transfer Jasmine Dixon led three Bruins in double digits with 14 points.The Bruins added the sophomore guard/forward to the active roster at UCSB. The former McDonald's All-American from Long Beach Poly HS transferred to UCLA from Rutgers after the first academic term last year. Dixon, who also led the Bruins with 19 points against the Gauchos, had her eligibility restored after '09 Fall term finals.
About The OpponentsSt. Mary's has won its last six straight games and has played two previous contests against Pac-10 conference opponents. SMC defeated Washington State in Pullman, WA by a score of 80-70 on Dec. 3. The Gaels dropped a 68-65 decision at Cal on Nov. 17. St. Mary's is one of the leading free throw shooting teams in the nation with a 76% mark.
UCLA leads the series by a 3-2 count, with each team owning wins in the games played on the home court. The Gaels won the last meeting, 53-52, in a game played in Moraga, CA on Dec. 6, 2003.
SMC was 11-19 last season and tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference. Six-four junior forward Louella Tomlinson is one of four Gaels scoring in double digits and averages 17.0 ppg and 9.8 rpg.
UCLA has won all five previous meetings with LMU. The Bruins bested the Lions 60-39 in the last meeting, played Dec. 5, 1996 at LMU.
LMU is 6-5 on the season (with a game to play on Dec. 21 v. San Diego State). Guard Renahy Young is the leading scorer for the Lions at 14.8 ppg.

DefenseThe Bruins have opened the season by holding all nine opponents to 61 points or less. The last time a UCLA team has opened the season with a stingier defense was in the 1974-75 campaign during which it held the first 18 opponents to 61 points or less. That is also the last time a Bruin team has held teams to 61 points or less over any nine-game stretch.
In addition, the Bruins have also held the last 14 opponents to less than 50% shooting from the field. In coach Caldwell's two seasons at helm, her Bruin teams have held 21 opponents to 60 points or less and eight opponents to 50 points or less.
