Post game quotes- Dec. 21 vs. Long Beach State
Dec. 21, 2009
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
'Wins like that come because of the team. The staff prepares, we try to do our job. And the kids have to go out and play. Coming off of a tough loss, it was great to see them play with heart. For me, it was seeing how much passion they were going to play with tonight, how much heart. And they did that tonight.'
On the uptempo pace of the game
'We just tried to play uptempo and get them out of rhythm and not let them run their stuff in quarter-court, because they are very good when they do and they are comfortable. So we had to play a little more uptempo tonight, and I thought was to our benefit tonight.'
'We did get some turnovers out of trapping, which gets some easy baskets for us. I thought that Long Beach did a good job of staying with the stuff that they do. They played with us the whole game. It wasn't like it became a 30-point game or anything. They are going to be a good team.'
On the play of the freshmen
'I thought Layshia did a great job tonight. We needed scoring tonight and she was the one to come out and hit a lot of baskets for us. I thought she did a really great job. We needed a spark off the bench and she was it.'
On playing after an 11-game break
'You are always rusty coming out of an 11-day break, so we needed that. The kids can now go and rest a couple of days and then get ready for the San Diego tournament and onto Pac-10's.'
Freshman guard Layshia Clarendon
'First, I want to give credit to Lexi (Alexis Gray-Lawson). Her commanding that box-and-one opened things up for all of us so much more. If she wasn't doing that, I wouldn't have gotten all of those open looks. Someone had to make the shots. It just happened to be me tonight.'
On playing in front of the hometown crowdI played in this building two years ago at CIF Finals, so I felt really comfortable.
On pressingWe knew we had to do it. We knew it was going to be hard with eight players, but that was the game plan. We tried to do our best. I was pretty dead by the end.
