Stanford's Kayla Pedersen Collects Second Pac-10 Player Of The Week Honor
Dec. 21, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - No. 2/2 Stanford women's basketball forward Kayla Pedersen was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Monday. Pedersen was Stanford's leading scorer in victories over top-10 foes Duke and Tennessee over the past week.
Monday's announcement marks the third time in her career that Pedersen has taken home the conference's weekly honor, and on the year it gives Stanford four of a possible six selections so far in 2009-10. Sophomore forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike has also captured the honor twice.
Pedersen averaged 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds and shot 57.1 percent from the floor, including a 66.7-percent (4-for-6) mark from three-point range over Stanford's two victories.
Last Tuesday, Pedersen started the week with a game-high 22 points on 5-for-10 shooting while also pulling down eight rebounds in Stanford's 71-55 victory over No. 7/8 Duke. The Fountain Hills, Ariz. native also hit 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and on the defensive end made a steal and blocked a pair of shots.
Her fine play continued Saturday in the Cardinal's 67-52 victory over No. 3/3 Tennessee, which helped extend Stanford's season-opening winning streak to nine games, the best start for the program since 1996-97. In the win Pedersen shot 7-for-11 from the field while leading all players with 16 points. She punctuated the effort with three assists and a blocked shot.
Pedersen and the Cardinal now travel to New England for a highly-anticipated clash against No. 1/1 Connecticut at 2:30 p.m. PT at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The contest will be televised live on ESPN2 and the pregame show will start at 2 p.m. PT.
