UCLA Baseball's Trevor Bauer, Gerrit Cole Secure Preseason All-America Honors

TUCSON, Ariz. - UCLA sophomore right-handed pitchers Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole have been named third-team preseason All-America selections by Collegiate Baseball, as announced by the weekly newspaper Monday. Both Bauer and Cole were honored as Freshman All-America selections by Collegiate Baseball in June 2009.
Bauer led UCLA with nine wins as a freshman last spring, posting a 9-3 record while leading the pitching staff with a 2.99 ERA in 105.1 innings. He compiled 92 strikeouts and 27 walks, registering a .225 opponent batting average. Bauer went 7-0 with a .298 ERA in Pac-10 play, tossing four complete games and earning one save.
Bauer ranked third among Pac-10 pitchers in innings pitched (105.1), tied for fourth in wins (9), seventh in ERA (2.99), eighth in strikeouts (92) and ninth in opponent batting average (.225). In addition, he tied the UCLA record for most wins by a freshman pitcher (Pete Janicki, nine wins in 1990).
Cole finished his freshman campaign with a 4-8 record and 3.49 ERA. The native of Santa Ana, Calif., led UCLA with 104 strikeouts, the fourth-highest total among Pac-10 pitchers. Cole limited the opposition to a Pac-10-low .191 batting average in 85.0 innings.
UCLA opens its season against Southern University on Friday, Feb. 19, in the third annual Urban Invitational. Game time at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium is 6 p.m.
