Washington Tops Oregon State, 76-70
Dec. 31, 2009
SEATTLE (AP)--Quincy Pondexter scored 20 points, Isaiah Thomas added 19 and No. 17 Washington opened its defense of its Pac-10 Conference title by holding on in the final minutes for a 76-70 win over Oregon State on Thursday night.
Scrappy reserve guard Venoy Overton scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half as Washington used a big surge over the final 12 minutes before the break to build a lead that withstood all of Oregon State's charges in the second half.
Washington (10-2, 1-0 Pac-10) is the only Pac-10 team ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 and began the conference season with a lethargic first 7 minutes. But Overton provided the spark and Washington closed the first half on a 33-14 run that gave the Huskies a 10-point halftime lead.
