Warren Berl: 1920-2009

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf program enters the new year without one of the finest golfers to come through the program: Warren Berl, a member of the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame who died Nov. 22 at his home in San Francisco at the age of 89.
Berl (class of '42) was a member of national championship teams in 1939 and 1941, finishing as the NCAA runner-up in '41.
He later served in the Pacific Theater at a Lieutenant on the U.S. Navy during World War II, including on the destroyer Aaron Ward, which was sunk at Guadalcanal. Berl went on to a successful business career when he joined his father at Edwin D. Berl & Sons, a San Francisco investment firm.
He continued on in golf, winning seven club championships at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club.
