Back in Dual Season: The Arizona swimming and diving teams will begin 2010 by hosting two dual meets this weekend at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The No. 2 ranked women’s team will be in action Friday when its hosts Oregon State and Northern Arizona. The No. 4 ranked men’s team will then take on SMU on Saturday. Both meets will commence at 2:00 p.m.
Last Time Out: Last time in the water, Arizona competed in the Texas Invitational with both the men and women proving their prowess over the field by each winning their respective meets. The women were led by senior Ana Agy who swept both backstroke competitions as well as Alyssa Anderson, Hannah Ross and Jenny Forster. On the men’s side, co-captains Jack Brown and Jean Basson both recorded NCAA automatic qualifying times and Jordan Smith also turned in several impressive swims as the team put up 1,125.5 total points in the meet.
National Swimmer of the Week: After her strong outing in Austin, Alyssa Anderson was named the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week. Anderson won the 500 freestyle (4:40.07, NCAA 'B' time), the 400 individual medley (4:09.37, NCAA 'B' time), swam to a third place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:56.30, NCAA 'B' time), a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:46.51, NCAA 'B' time) and swam to a sixth place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:01.12, NCAA 'B' time). Anderson also swam on the third place 400 freestyle relay (3:20.85, NCAA 'B' time).
Smith Swimming Well: Senior Jordan Smith has been on fire through the beginning of the year in freestyle events. The Reno, Nev. native has the fourth fastest time in the country in the 50 free at 19.54. In the 100 free, Smith is third overall with a time of 43.27.
Backstroke Monopoly: To say the Arizona women’s backstroke team is deep would be an understatement. The team of Ana Agy, Hannah Ross, Jenny Forster, Caitlin Iversen and Erin Campbell currently rank in the top 20 in the country for fastest times in the 200 back. Additionally Agy and Ross also rank among the nation’s leaders in the 100 back.
In the Dive Pool: Junior Ben Grado continues to lead the Arizona diving contingent in 2009-10. Grado took home second place in the one-meter event during the Arizona Diving Invite in November. Grado and Andres Guerra have each scored high enough to qualify for the NCAA Zone E Qualifying Invite. The Cats will look for Cody Montgomery to advance onto Austin for qualifying as well. On the women’s side, Ainsley Oliver has been impressive along with freshman Ashley Herrera. Both divers will look to gain high enough scores this month to qualify for Zones.
Auto Times: With the new swimsuit rules, no one is quite sure of what is a fast NCAA consideration time. Arizona seniors Jack Brown and Jean Basson can be certain though that they’ll be included in any postseason field however after they each garnered automatic qualifying times. Basson, the reigning 500 free NCAA Champion, recorded an A cut time of 4:15.22 in the same event. He also swam a 14:50.32 in the 1650 free to earn an additional automatic time. Brown notched an A cut time in the 200 I.M. with a 1:44.05 showing. He then followed that up with an automatic time of 3:44.41 in the 400 I.M.
