USC Swimmers Resume Season At UCSB

The USC men's and women's swimming teams, which turned in a host of great efforts in December at the Short Course National Championships and the Speedo Winter Sectionals, return to dual meet action on Saturday (Jan. 9) at UC Santa Barbara at noon.
USC's women's team enters at 8-1 overall while the men's squad is 7-1. The Gaucho men are 3-0 and the women are 4-1.
Hosszu, a 2009 World Championship gold and silver medalist as well as a three-time finalist at the 2009 NCAA Championships, was named the 2009 Hungarian Female Athlete of the Year in December. She is coming off of four top 3 performances at the 2009 U.S. Short Course National Championships last month, including a title in the 200y fly. Her other top three marks came in the 200y and 400y IM and the 500y free. She has three NCAA automatic qualifying marks this season in the 200y IM (1:56, 11, a USC record), the 400y IM (4:04.17) and the 200y fly (1:53.37). She also enjoys USC's top time in the 500y free (4:40.87, NCAA `B' cut).
DePaul was also a four-time finalist at the Short Course Nationals, finishing third in the 200y fly, sixth in the 400y IM, seventh in the 100y fly and eighth in the 200y IM. At the Speedo Winter Sectionals, she won the 200y fly in an NCAA `A' cut of 1:54.55 and won the 200y IM in a strong `B' cut of 1:58.25. She also has `B' cuts in the 200y free (1:46.72), 500y free (4:47.34), 100y fly (53.66) and the 200y breast (2:16.05).
Freshmen Haley Anderson, Jessie Schmitt, Lili Shiota and Yumi So all have at least two NCAA `B' cuts, the quartet part of a strong Trojan freshman class that has bolstered USC's depth. Anderson holds `B' cuts in the 200y free (1:47.77), 500y free (4:40.93) and 1650y free (16:05.27), Schmitt has them in the 200y IM (2:01.15), 400y IM (4:17.89), 100y breast (1:02.86) and the 200y breast (2:14.12), Shiota has them in the 100y (54.24) and the 200y back (1:57.64) while So has them in the 100y (53.71) and 200y fly (2:00.46).
Other USC swimmers with NCAA `B' cuts include freshman Kate Shumway (200y free, 1:48.45), junior Ellie Doran (500y free, 4:47.60, 1650y free 16:28.44), sophomore Tanya Krisman (400y IM, 4:19.05, 100y fly, 54.47, 200y fly, 1:57.04) and senior Dina Hegazy (100y back, 54.24, 1:56.77).
Sophomore diver Victoria Ishimatsu, who, with Hosszu, comprise USC's returning All-Americans from last year, was the Pac-10 Women's Diver of the Month for November and she continues to perform at a high level. She won the 1-meter (314.40) and the 3-meter competitions (304.73) in the Arizona dual meet, followed by a win in 3-meter (334.88) in the Arizona State dual. In the Trojan Diving Invitational, Ishimatsu put up strong numbers, scoring 312.10 on 1-meter, 334.40 on 3-meter and 236.25 on platform.
In addition to Hosszu and Ishimatsu, Hegazy, senior Krissy Forelli, Doran and Krisman are returning NCAA Championships participants. The Women of Troy said goodbye to six-time NCAA champion Rebecca Soni as well as All-Americans Kristen Lahey and Rachael Waller and 2009 NCAA point scorer Katy Houston.
On the men's team, freshmen Clement Lefert, a French Olympian, and Alex Lendrum lead USC with four NCAA `B' cuts apiece. Lefert has them in the 200y (1:34.96) and 500y free (4:19.60) and the 100y (47.40) and the 200y fly (1:45.59). Lendrum's marks come in the 200y (1:49.07) and 400y IM (3:51.34) and the 100y (48.71) and the 200y back (1:45.18). Senior co-captain James Martin has clocked `B' cuts in the 200y (1:49.25) and 400y IM (3:49.23) and the 200y back (1:46.42). Sophomore Josh Joiner has a pair in the 100y (48.92) and 200y fly (1:46.68), sophomore Patrick White has two in the 200y (1:36.08) and 500y free (4:23.63) and senior Zoltan Povazsay also has them in the 200y (1:36.55) and the 500y free (4:21.55). Junior Emmett Walling has a `B' cut in the 50y free (20.19) sophomore Jeff Daniels has one in the 100y free (43.94), sophomore Julian Bonse has one in the 1650y free (15:29.15) and junior Dillon Connolly has one in the 100y breast (54.44).
Sophomore diver Harrison Jones, USC's lone returning All-American from last year, was named the Pac-10 Men's Diver of the Month for November. In a stellar November, he broke the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium record on 3-meter, scoring 464.25 in a dual meet against Arizona State. At the Trojan Diving Invitational, he won the 1-meter (370.00) and platform (350.00). Jones also earned another first-place finish in 3-meter diving vs. Arizona with a score of 418.00.
In addition to Jones, Martin, Povazsay, Connolly, junior diver Steven Starks, Joiner and White are all returning NCAA Championships participants. Among the departed Trojans from last season are former All-American Vanni Mangoni as well as NCAA Championships participant Kevin Bartell.
