No. 24 Wrestling Builds to 11 Straight at Stanford Duals

Stanford, Calif. – Eight wrestlers of the 24th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team went a perfect 3-0 at the Stanford Duals on Saturday. The Beavers defeated Northern Colorado, 48-0, Menlo College, 54-0 and conference opponent Stanford, 31-7.

 

Oregon State (12-1) is currently on an 11-dual meet streak, the longest since the 14-dual meet streak in 1986.

 

Twelfth-ranked junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) and 20th-ranked sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) both tallied a pair of pins in their three wins at 174 pounds and heavyweight. Covington added a decision over Jake Johnson of Stanford to add to his falls over Patrick Prentice of Northern Colorado and Allen LaGrange of Menlo College. And Jack chalked up a forfeit against Menlo after falls over Justin Tuell at Northern Colorado and Dylan Rush of Stanford.

 

Adding more bonus points on the board at 149 pounds, No. 15 freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) started off the day with a 17-2 technical fall over Justin Gonzales of Northern Colorado before recording his 11th fall of the season over Cody Gibson of Menlo. Pena put six points on the board against Stanford by calculating a forfeit.

 

Seventeenth-ranked redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) remained undefeated in dual meet action by winning all three of his bouts with a pair of decisions and a 27-9 technical fall at 125 pounds. And No. 15 sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) improved to 25-6 with a technical fall, fall and decision on the day at 133 pounds.

 

Redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) earned a pair of decisions and a forfeit at 141 pounds to jump over the 20-win mark on the season, while 12th-ranked senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) went 3-0 on the day with a couple of decisions and a forfeit. And wrapping up the perfect eight, sophomore Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) earned bonus points in all three of his matches starting with a forfeit before a technical fall and a major decision at 197 pounds.

 

Also picking up individual wins were senior Dan Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.), sophomore Anthony Peressini (Henderson, Nev.) and redshirt freshman Ty Vinson (Great Falls, Mont.). Brascetta earned a 17-1 technical fall over Rocco DePaolo of Northern Colorado at 165 pounds. Peressini won a tight 7-6 decision at 165 pounds against Menlo College. And Vinson earned a 21-4 technical fall voer Sean Weeks of Menlo at 184 pounds.

 

Oregon State returns home to host conference opponents UC Davis and Cal State Bakersfield. The Beavers will take on the Aggies at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and the Runners on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
