Cal's Hawaii Training Trip Blog: Day 3
Jan. 11, 2010
HONOLULU - The California women's swimming team is writing a blog about its current training in Hawaii, which began on Jan. 6 and ends on Jan. 14. The trip includes ocean and pool training along with an unofficial meet against the Hawaii Swimming Club. Lauren Boyle continues the blog with Day 3.
Day 3 - Jan 8
Today we swam in the ocean in the morning and split into groups in the afternoon. The gold group had a pool practice similar to what the blue group had yesterday. The blue group had a free afternoon.
After realizing Makapuu may no longer be the perfect beach, the blue group set off for an adventure to find better waves. They drove to Kailua Beach, otherwise known as President Barack Obama's beach. Apparently it was one of his favorite beaches growing up! It was really exciting to visit a place where someone so important had spent a lot of time.
Kailua turned out to be flat but also extremely picturesque and clear. The blue group swam around and some ventured out to the nearby island, which was made of volcanic rock. There were a few minor injuries on the treacherous surfaces, but everyone returned all smiles.
In the evening, Nick invited us to watch his alma mater (University of Hawaii) play Penn State in men's volleyball. It was an awesome game and was also televised, so our teammates who stayed back in Waikiki could watch us in the stands (and the game) back at the apartment!
