Men's And Women's Tennis Programs Open Spring Season

STANFORD, Calif.- The Stanford tennis teams are back in action this weekend, kicking off the spring season of competition with a pair of tournaments.
The men's squad will be participating at the Sherwood Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif., from Jan. 15-18, before starting the dual match season on Jan. 23 with its home opener against Sacramento State.
The latest edition of the national rankings has Stanford at No. 9. The men's top-10 includes the following: No. 1 USC, No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Tennessee, No. 6 Baylor, No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Texas and No. 10 Mississippi.
Junior Alex Clayton and sophomore Bradley Klahn have been awarded national singles rankings, with Clayton checking in at No. 37 and Klahn coming in at No. 54. Klahn posted a 9-2 mark during the fall while Clayton finished 3-2 in five matches.
Meanwhile, the team of Klahn and sophomore Ryan Thacher is currently tabbed the nation's No. 1 doubles squad after compiling a 12-1 record in the fall. Klahn and Thacher captured tournament titles at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and the ITA National Indoor Championships.
The women's team will send split squads to the Freeman Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., and the NCTC Classic in Indian Wells, Calif. The Cardinal opens its dual match campaign with a home contest against Hawai'i on Jan. 27.
Stanford owns the No. 13 spot in the national rankings, with the top-10 consisting of the following: No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Northwestern, No. 3 California, No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 Baylor, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Miami, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 USC and No. 10 Georgia Tech.
Three players are ranked nationally in singles, including two in the top-20. Freshman Mallory Burdette debuts at No. 16, two spots ahead of junior Hilary Barte at No. 18. Junior Carolyn McVeigh is No. 78. Burdette notched a 9-1 mark during the fall, capturing the singles title at the Saint Mary's Invitational. Barte tallied a 6-3 mark through nine matches while McVeigh went 3-2.
Just like the men's squad, the women boast one of the nation's best doubles teams. The duo of Barte and senior Lindsay Burdette is currently ranked No. 2 after closing out the fall season at 11-1 overall with titles at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and ITA National Indoor Championships. Barte and Burdette have already faced the nation's No. 1 squad of Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota twice, with each team winning a match.
Stanford is one of nine schools in the country to have both its men's and women's programs ranked among the nation's top-20.
