Women's Tennis Ranked No. 3 in Campbell/ITA Preseason Poll

BERKELEY - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its preseason rankings on Tuesday, Jan. 5, with the California women's tennis team holding the No. 3 spot. The Golden Bears received three first-place votes in the preseason Campbell/ITA College Tennis Poll and are the highest-ranked team from the Pacific-10 Conference with defending league-champion USC at No. 9. UCLA received the No. 12 ranking with Stanford following close behind at No. 13. Washington earned the No. 24 ranking to give the Pac-10 a total of five teams in the top 25. With 21 first-place votes, defending NCAA champion Duke is the top-ranked team in the first poll of the spring followed by Northwestern at No. 2 with nine first-place votes.
No. 2-ranked sophomore Jana Juricova is one of three nationally-ranked Cal singles players with junior Marina Cossou drawing the No. 10 ranking and junior Mari Andersson receiving the No. 83 singles ranking. Georgia Tech sophomore Irina Falconi is the top-ranked singles player. The Bears do not have a ranked doubles team.
Cal will open the 2010 dual season against Hawaii with a 3 p.m. HT match at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu on Thursday, Jan. 14. The Bears will return home to host Cal Poly, Saint Mary's and Fresno State in the Cal Winter Invitational from Friday, Jan. 22 through Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal started the season with the No. 2 ranking a year ago and finished at No. 4 as the NCAA runner-up with a 22-5 overall record (7-1 Pac-10, second). The team of Andersson and Juricova completed a 25-3 season in doubles play to capture Cal's sixth NCAA doubles championship.
