Post Game Quotes - Cal vs Washington State, Jan. 16, 2009
Jan. 16, 2010
Head coach Joanne Boyle
'I'm excited to get another win at home and start digging ourselves out of the hole. It wasn't always pretty, but it is lessons learned when your back is up against the wall and a young team figures out how to win a game.'
'We started pressing a little more, trying to take time off the clock. In quarter-court, they were just taking us off the dribble. They're not a great three-point shooting team, but in the first half, they were six of 15. They were hot! We tried to go with some zone and change it up, but they were hitting everything. We had to come out and not give them easy looks. And part of that was trying to tire them out. So they wouldn't have legs to shoot it as well in the second half. We still got burned a couple of times, but it was just trying to change that tempo.'
On the upcoming road trip
'The Pac-10 is all over the map. Anybody can beat anybody. I don't care if you're looking at the bottom team or the top team. You have to go in and do what you can do, because you can't control what everyone else is doing. We talk about being road warriors and going out there. You talk about three-point shooting teams, we are about to face one of the best in the country in Oregon. Understanding our mentality through practice this week and what that is going to look like for us. Any time you can go into someone's gym and steal a game or two on the road, that is huge for us.'
Senior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson
'I was kind of mad at myself for getting two early fouls in the first half and letting my team down. In the second half, my coaches told me to still be aggressive, even though I had two fouls, so that is what I did. I was making sure I took good shots and I wasn't trying to force anything.'
'They (Washington State) have really good guards, They were penetrating. We needed to be in help side and we were fouling. I think we were out of element, but we picked it up in the end. I think our pressure is very big for us, especially being a very young team and being very athletic. It helps us out. I don't think we had the defensive intensity we always have. It kind of hurt us today. That was pretty much why the game was close.'
Freshman guard Eliza Pierre
'My understanding of my role on the team is more of defense and making stops and stuff, getting my team ready and pumped. I'm more of a defensive stopper. With teams like Washington and Washington State that have great guards, my job is to pick them up early and get stops. I like it! It's kind of fun! To see everyone getting amped up when I get a steal. Getting a steal and then throwing an outlet pass to Lex (Alexis Gray-Lawson), it is fun!'
'Lex played great. She had the hot hand today. I remember, I got a rebound and I was looking for Lex, like 'where are you at?'. She just called my name and I would throw her the ball. Everything she threw just went in. She had the hot hand. She did great.'
