Golden Bears Top Tulsa in 6-1 Victory

TULSA, Okla. - No. 33-ranked California men's tennis junior Jonathan Dahan's 6-3, 6-0 win over Alastair Barnes of Tulsa helped seal a second win in the Sooner State as the No. 40-ranked Golden Bears (2-0) defeated No. 34 Tulsa (3-1), 6-1, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 17. For the second match in a row, Cal earned eight victories out of nine matches and secured the doubles point.

Dahan and junior Pedro Zerbini recorded the first win of the day as they took out Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling at the top doubles court. Moments later, Cal's No. 49-ranked doubles team of sophomore Nick Andrews and freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt notched the doubles point for the Bears with their 8-4 win over Marko Ballok and Barnes at the second court. Junior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan finished off doubles play with an 8-5 win against Grant Ive and Rusty Turpin at court three.

Into singles matches, Zerbini made a statement as he crushed the No. 21-ranked player in the country by a 6-1, 6-2 count. Zerbini's straight-set win over Watling gave the Bears a solid 2-0 lead in the match before McLachlan came up with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tristan Jackson at No. 6 singles for the 3-0 lead. Then, Dahan made the score 4-0 and closed the match with his win over Barnes at court three.

The Golden Hurricane earned its first point of the match as Stephens completed a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 106-ranked Konigsfeldt at court two, but the Bears took home the final two points of the match for a 6-1 victory as No. 98-ranked Katsarov and Andrews each came away with wins. Katsarov defeated Ballok in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-3, after winning the first set, 6-1. Andrews split sets with Ive as he won the first, 6-3, and lost the second, 6-4. The two played out a third-set tiebreaker with Andrews coming out on top, 11-9, for the win.
