Arizona's Whyte Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Jan. 18, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- ARIZONA freshman guard Davellyn Whyte was selected Pac-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 11-17, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. Whyte becomes the first freshman to win the weekly award since 2007-08.
Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) averaged 26.5 points per game, helping the Wildcats to a pair of wins over the Oregon schools, including a historic 119-112 victory over the Ducks. It was Arizona’s first weekend sweep of Oregon State and Oregon since the 2007-08 campaign. Whyte’s hot scoring came on the strength of 62.9 percent shooting overall (17-for-27), including 63.6 percent from three-point range (7-for-11) and 85.7 percent from the free throw line (12-for-14).
Whyte set the Arizona single-game scoring record, netting 39 points in the win over Oregon, a Pac-10 season-high as well. She was efficient all over the floor, missing just one three pointer in six tries and going 10-for-12 from the charity stripe. Whyte’s 39-point effort helped the Wildcats set the Pac-10 mark for most points in a Conference game and the 231 combined points scored by both teams were also a league record.
Whyte started the week tallying 14 points in a 62-53 win over Oregon State, shooting 50 percent from the floor (5-for-10) and hitting a pair of threes. The win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Beavers.
It is Arizona’s 36th all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week selection and the first this year.
The Wildcats remain at home to close a three-game homestand, hosting Arizona State on Sunday, Jan. 24. The game will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
