Vollmer, Kennedy Combine for 7 Medals in SoCal Grand Prix

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Former California stars Dana Vollmer and Madison Kennedy combined to win four gold medals and seven medals overall in the Southern California Grand Prix meet held Jan. 15-18 at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Vollmer claimed the 100- and 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly titles, while Kennedy triumphed in the 50-yard free.
The one-time teammates went head-to-head in the 50 free, with Kennedy edging second-place Vollmer by one tenth of a second, 22.91-23.01, to claim gold.
Vollmer, the 2009 NCAA and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year, captured one title on each day of the meet, clocking a time of 47.63 to win the 100 free on Jan. 16. Kennedy won bronze in 49.01. Also on the first day of the grand prix, Vollmer won the B final of the 500 free in a time of 4:53.53 to place ninth overall.
In the 200 free on Jan. 17, Vollmer claimed gold with a time of 1:43.29, while Kennedy placed fifth (1:47.58). Vollmer led off Cal's Pac-10 winning 800-free relay in a time of 1:41.53 on Feb. 25, 2009, to set the current American, U.S. Open and NCAA records in the 200 free.
On the final day of the grand prix, Vollmer swam in three finals. She posted a time of 51.42 to win the 100 fly. Later, she took fourth (54.43) and Kennedy was 10th (56.38) in the 100 backstroke. Vollmer took bronze (1:58.44) in the 200 individual medley, her final event of the meet.
