TUCSON - The University of Arizona men's tennis team opens up the 2010 season Sunday against Montana State at 10 a.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats will host the Bobcats who finished 14-11 last season.
The No. 24 Wildcats finished last season at 18-6, arguably their best season in school history and also advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The team begins their season ranked at No. 24 in the ITA Rankings and they return seven of their 11 players. They also add four newcomers to their roster.
The Wildcats competed in five tournaments in the fall, the NMSU Fall Invitational, the Pepperdine Fall Classic, D'Novo ITA All-American, ITA West Regional Championships and the UNLV Fall Classic.
This season, the Wildcats will look to seniors Ravid Hazi and Pat Metham for leadership and experience. In the fall, Hazi advanced to the quarterfinals in the Rebel Classic while Metham advanced to the semifinals.
Goldman opened up the fall preseason ranked at 36 in the ITA Preseason Rankings. Carrasco proceeded to the semifinals in the fall at the Rebel Classic and Embry finished the fall season on a high note, winning the Rebel Classic. Zafiros made it to the semifinals in the fall of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships.
In addition, the Wildcats will look to junior transfer Borja Malo, who transferred from the University of Georgia. Malo finished the 2009 fall season with the Bulldogs in the round of 32 at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Championships. The Wildcats also add sophomore transfer Tom Wolff and two freshmen, Frank Chen and Alex Johnson.
Head coach Tad Berkowitz enters his fifth season at Arizona and is the reigning Pac-10 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year. Berkowitz led the Wildcats last season to the program's seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. Berkowitz will be assisted by Tom Lloyd who enters his fourth season. The Wildcats are pleased to add Ryan Johnson to their coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.
'We are ready to go,' head coach Tad Berkowitz said. 'Myself, as well as the guys can't wait to get our season started.'
Up next, the Wildcats travel to the ITA National Indoors in Tuscaloosa, Ala. where they will play Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. MST.
