TUCSON--The Arizona women's tennis team kicks off the spring season this weekend hosting UC Davis on Friday at 1:30pm, and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 10:30am. Both matches will be held at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
This season, the Wildcats return seven from last year's roster, including seniors Ariane Masschelein, Claire Rietsch, and Natalia Toporowska. In fall play, Masschelein went 12-5 in singles matches, and won her bracket at the 2009 Miner Fall Invite. Rietsch, in doubles with returning sophomore Natasha Marks, competed to the semifinal round of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships. Toporowska, who did not play last year due to injury, is likely to return to the courts this spring.
Junior Jane Huh, and sophomores Sarah Landsman, Natasha Marks, and Debora Castany round out Arizona's returnees. In fall doubles play, Huh went 2-0 with Masschelein at the UNM Fall Invite. Landsman went 10-3 in singles play, including four straight wins at the 2009 Southwest Collegiate Invite. Marks, who earned a No. 4 seed at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships made it to the semifinal round with wins over players from Arizona State and Pepperdine. Marks is now ranked at No. 46 in the Campbell's/ITA Women's Tennis Singles Rankings. Castany, in fall singles, went 3-1 at the Miner Fall Invite.
Joining the Arizona roster are freshmen Shannon Cassidy, Elizabeth Hammond, and Alexandrina Naydenova. On her debut with the Wildcats, Cassidy went 3-1 at the Miner Fall Invite, and Hammond started off fall play 1-1 and the 2009 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships. Naydenova joined the Wildcats as a transfer from the University of Georgia.
'We are extremely pumped to start our season.' Said head coach Vicky Maes, 'We feel that, if we play mentally solid throughout every match, we can battle with everyone this year. It's going to be a long and challenging season, but our team is ready to step up. Our first two matches this weekend cannot be overlooked. We have to focus on every opponent and take the season match by match.'
Up next, the Wildcats will host in-state rival Northern Arizona on Saturday, January 30 at noon at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
