Wildcat Men Beat Cardinal, 174-124

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 3 Arizona men’s swimming and diving team defeated No. 2 Stanford today, 174-124, in dual meet in Palo Alto, Calif. The win improved Arizona’s record to 5-0 in the dual meet season and handed the Cardinal its first dual meet loss in two years.
Arizona got off to a bit of a slow start, dropping the opening 200 medley relay and 1000 freestyle, before Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or took the 200 freestyle event with a time of 1:36.30. Jack Brown and Joel Greenshields also scored for the Cats in the event, finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Stanford’s Eugene Godsoe would edge out UA’s Cory Chitwood in the 100 backstroke, but Chitwood would find revenge in the 200 backstroke, topping Godsoe with a time of 1:44.04. Bryan O’Connor and Jake Tapp would provide depth to Arizona’s attack in both backstroke competitions with Tapp finishing third in the 200 back and fourth in the 100, while O’Connor placed fifth in the 200 back and third in the 100.
The Wildcats proved their strength in breaststroke over the Cardinal, finishing 1-2 in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Marcus Titus won the 100 breast in 55.61. He was followed by Clark Burckle who swam a 55.72. In the 200 breast, Burckle sealed the win with a 1:59.16 showing. Brown, Arizona’s school record-holder in the event, placed second with a time of 2:01.02. In total points between both breaststroke events, Arizona outscored Stanford 30-8.
A.J. Tipton won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:46.60 to outpace Stanford’s David Mosko. Jordan Slaughter was third with a time of 1:47.86. In the 100 butterfly, Tipton finished second overall followed by Slaughter in third with times of 48.75 and 49.09, respectively.
UA’s Jordan Smith lost his first dual meet race of 09-10 when he was out-touched by Alex Coville by three hundredths of a second to finish with a time of 20.17 in the 50 freestyle. In the 100 freestyle, Smith would again finish runner-up to Coville with a time of 44.63.
Perhaps two of the biggest wins for the Arizona men’s team today belonged to Ben Grado who won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Grado had scores of 359.70 in the one-meter event and 378.90 in the three-meter competition. Andres Guerra also had a solid day from the boards, placing second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter. UA combined to outscore Stanford in men’s diving 25-11 on the afternoon.
Jean Basson took home the 500 freestyle event with a time of 4:25.60. Shapira Bar-Or was third in the event with a time of 4:28.89.
In the final individual event of the afternoon, the Wildcats put on quite a display with four swimmers all finishing ahead of Stanford’s four competitors. Sophomore Austen Thompson won the race with a time of 1:48.97 followed by Brown, Burckle and Chitwood.
To close the dual meet, the Arizona team of Shapira Bar-Or, Smith, Rob Iddiols and Greenshields took home the 400 freestyle event with a time of 2:56.89 to nearly beat the Cardinal freestyle foursome by two seconds.
UA will head to Berkeley tomorrow to face off against No. 4 California beginning at noon.
