STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford softball team earned the No. 10 ranking in the NFCA Preason Poll and the No. 12 spot in the 2010 ESPN/USA Softball Preseason Poll, announced today by both organizations.
The Cardinal finished 2009 with a 48-11 record and advanced to its fourth NCAA Super Regional in five years. The team finished fourth in the competitive Pac-10 Conference and ended the year with a No. 9/10 ranking in the two polls.
Stanford returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad, including All-American outfielder Alissa Haber and All-American infielder Ashley Hansen. Also returning are 2009 starters Jenna Becerra, Maya Burns, Sarah Hassman, Shannon Koplitz, Melisa Koutz and Rosey Neill.
Six of the eight Pac-10 squads appeared in the top-12 of both polls. Defending national champion Washington was a unanimous No. 1 pick in the NFCA poll and tops the ESPN/USA Softball list as well. Arizona (6/4), Arizona State (5/7) and UCLA (8/6) were all ranked in the top-10. California was listed at No. 12/11. Along with the Pac-10 schools, Alabama (2/2), Florida (3/5) and Michigan (4/3) all made the top-5.
The Cardinal is scheduled to play 21 games against preseason top-25 teams this year, beginning with No. 25/24 Fresno State on Feb. 21.
The Cardinal opens the season Thursday, Feb. 11, versus Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Paradise Softball Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
