Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team moved up a spot to 21st this week in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll for week 11.
The Beavers were previously ranked 22nd for two weeks after breaking into the list in the December 8 poll.
Adding to the jump, junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) cracked the top 10 in the Intermat Division I Individual Rankings, earning a ninth place ranking this week. Covington, who was previously ranked 11th, moved up after defeating previously ranked No. 3 Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska last Sunday in a 2-1 decision at 174 pounds.
Five other Oregon State wrestlers also remain ranked in the InterMat Individual Rankings with senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) leading the way with a 12th place ranking at 157 pounds. Sophomore heavyweight Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) is 14th, while redshirt freshman Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) is 15th at 125 pounds and sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) is 16th at 133 pounds. Freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) rounds out the ranked wrestlers, earning a 17th place ranking at 149 pounds.
The Beavers have defeated one top 25 opponent in No. 12 Wisconsin in the first dual of the season, but fell to No. 8 Boise State that same day. Oregon State will take on three more ranked opponents before the regular season is over in Boise State again, No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 16 Cal Poly and No. 24 Arizona State, who the team will take on Sunday.
Oregon State is currently riding a 14-meet winning streak going into Sunday’s dual against the Sun Devils, the longest since 1985.
