Women's Track Opens Indoor Season at Washington Invitational
Jan. 27, 2010
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State women’s track team opens its indoor season at the Washington Invitational, sending 13 to Dempsey Indoor, for the two-day meet beginning on Friday, Jan. 29. The Beavers will race only on Saturday.
“We are all excited to get this group of 13 its first test run during the winter training period,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “We don’t try to peak or over emphasize the indoor season, as we are still training through the winter months and use these meets as test efforts. So we have no specific track workouts leading into them, but it’s normally a great way to break up the training with something to shoot for. And in my years of doing this, a race normally helps push their training to a new level soon after.”
The six runners confirmed to run the mile are juniors Ashley Berry (Medford, Ore.) and Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.), redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia), redshirt freshman Natosha Buruse (Ridgefield, Wash.) and freshman Sabrina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Sophomore Casey Masterson (Eugene, Ore.) holds the school record for the indoor mile, finishing in 4:51.87 last season on February 14 at the Husky Classic.
The remaining seven runners will be competing in the 3,000 meters. That group includes juniors Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.) and Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.), redshirt freshmen Lorine Cruz (Grants Pass, Ore.) and Emily Olsen (Medford, Ore.) and freshmen Regina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.), Sandra Martinez (Yakima, Wash.) and Taylor Nowlin (West Linn, Ore.).
The school record for the indoor 3,000 meters was set by Kathy Knowlton in 1985, finishing the race in 9:51.24. Chesimet has the second fastest time of 10:02.17 set last season.
The Washington Invitational is one of three meets that Oregon State will be competing in at Dempsey Indoor at the University of Washington. The Beavers will return on Friday, Feb. 12, for the two-day Husky Classic and Saturday, Mar. 6, for the Washington Last Chance Qualifier.
