Jan. 28, 2010
TUCSON -- The Arizona softball team has been picked to finish second in the Pac-10 Conference, according to the Coaches Poll released today.
UA was placed one spot ahead of defending conference champion UCLA, but below the preseason favorites from Washington.
The race is tight in the middle of the pack with Arizona State, the 2008 national champions tied for fourth with Stanford, each having collected 26 votes. California is just behind, with 25 votes to nab the sixth spot. Oregon tallied 11 points for seventh, followed by Oregon State with 9 points.
The Pac-10 has won 22 of a total of 27 NCAA softball championships, including the last four straight, and will look to add to that mark in 2010.
Washington will begin the defense of its title on February 11 in a game against Auburn at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Arizona State and Stanford also begin their seasons on February 11, followed by Arizona, California, Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA opening their seasons on February 12 in tournament play. Conference play will begin on April 1.
