Coaches Pick Cardinal Fourth In Preseason Pac-10 Poll

STANFORD, Calif. - The 2010 Pac-10 Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll has been released, with the Cardinal picked to tie for fourth-place with the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The Cardinal finished 2009 with a 48-11 record and advanced to its fourth NCAA Super Regional in five years. The team finished fourth in the competitive Pac-10 Conference and ended the year with a No. 9/10 ranking in the two polls. Three Pac-10 teams return from Women's College World Series appearances, six are coming off trips to NCAA Super Regionals. Six of the eight Pac-10 teams were ranked in both of the nation's two major softball polls earlier this month.
Stanford returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad, including All-American outfielder Alissa Haber and All-American infielder Ashley Hansen. Also returning are 2009 starters Jenna Becerra, Maya Burns, Sarah Hassman, Shannon Koplitz, Melisa Koutz and Rosey Neill.
Washington (49 points), the 2009 NCAA national champions, earned seven first-place votes. The Huskies are followed by 2009 NCAA WCW participant Arizona, which garnered 41 points, while UCLA, which tallied one first-place vote, came in third with 37 points. Arizona State and Stanford tied for fourth with 26 points, edging out California, which was picked sixth with 25 points. Oregon (11 points) and Oregon State (9 points) round out the poll.
Stanford opens the season Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Paradise Softball Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Cardinal will face Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. HT.
