Lane Lines: Kirsten Byers Checks In With A Swimming & Diving Update
Jan. 28, 2010
Our first home meet against Kansas and Fresno St. two weeks ago was amazing- we successfully defended our home turf against both teams and I'm confident we played gracious hosts throughout the meet. The environment at Spieker was everything I hoped it would be. It was so energizing to have the fans in the stands and especially the band! My favorite aspect of the new venue was having diving and swimming at the same location. In our locker room during the pre-meet meeting, it was a special moment to have the entire team united for the first time at a home meet.
Since then, the team has returned to work training and preparing for our duals against Stanford and Cal this weekend. Power and resistance training, along with intense focus on the details of our races have been the main priority. Each morning and afternoon, I come into the pool and simply try to do everything right so that I can be a little better every practice. Mother Nature threw us a curve ball last week with pouring rain every day, but we all embraced it. The weather did not affect our time in the pool very much (except the coaches who had to stand on deck), but it made walking to class a challenge - navigating through a sea of umbrellas. I am thankful that normal California weather has returned at least for a while!
It is hard to believe we are already into our fourth week of classes. This month between training, studying for classes, taking exams, meeting with career counselors, planning Bruin Athletic Council meetings, and preparing for our upcoming team banquet, it has been a challenge fitting in the time to recover! Outside of the pool, one of the highlights of the month for me so far was definitely the UCLA vs. University of Washington basketball game. Supporting other Bruins is a huge part of being a student-athlete here, and I loved cheering at the game and watching the phenomenal finish! I hope that our meets this weekend will provide similar excitement. Stanford and Cal are two very talented teams, so it will be a great opportunity to execute some amazing races and get the job done while continuing to prepare for NCAAs.
