BERKELEY, Calif. - California guard Alexis Gray-Lawson scored a game-high 39 points to lead the Golden Bears to a 73-53 win over visiting Arizona, Thursday evening at Haas Pavilion.
Gray-Lawson, who is the reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week after tallying 47 points last Saturday at Oregon State, accounted for 53 percent of her team's points and took 47 percent of the Golden Bears' shots as she finished the game 15-of-30 from the field.
Gray-Lawson, however, made sure the Golden Bears would win their 5th-straight game as she scored all 12 points in a 12-3 stretch over the next 5:33 that pushed the lead back to double digits at 48-38.
The early advantage was slowly chipped away by the Golden Bears as they turned that 8-point deficit into a 8-point advantage. Gray-Lawson hit 7-of-13 shots in the opening stanza to tally 18 points and record half of her team's points in the opening stanza.
Arizona finished the half 12-of-23 from the floor (.522), but was just 4-of-12 (.333) after its hot start. California also snagged 12 offensive rebounds, matching the entire first half total for Arizona, and turned those into 9 second chance points.
No other California player scored in double figures for the game as the rest of the team combined to shoot 10-of-34 (.294) from the field. However, the Bears converted 17 Wildcat turnovers into 21 points and pulled down 20 offensive rebounds, led by Gennifer Brandon with 8 of her game-high 15 boards.
All-American Ify Ibekwe led Arizona with 21 points and 12 rebounds, making 7-of-11 shots from the field while also adding four blocked shots. Davellyn Whyte added 11 points as the Cats finished 19-of-50 (.380) from the field and were outrebounded, 44-29.
Arizona (9-9, 3-5) completes its two-game road trip through northern California with a visit to #2-ranked Stanford on Saturday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m. (PT)
