California at Dual Meet in Arizona

The California women's gymnastics team fell 194.700-189.375 in a dual meet against the Arizona Wildcats Friday night in Tucson.

Cal's top score came in the vault. They posted a 48.175 combined, just off the Wildcats 48.675. It was the highest score on beam for the team this season. Sophia Hocini was second in the event, earning a 9.825.

On the bars, the freshman came through with a pair of strong performances. Stina Olivere tied for second with a 9.775 in just her second attempt at bars on the season. Madisyn O'Brien tied for fourth with a 9.700, her highest score in any event so far this season.

Freshman Nicolette Lew continues her streak of solid beam performances, earning a 9.700. Lew has not earned below a 9.700 yet this season in the event.

On the floor, freshman Mariesah Pierce and junior Avery Gee tied for second place, each earning a 9.750 for their routines.

Madisyn O'Brien was the lone all-arounder for the Bears, finishing third. Sophia Hocini did not compete on bars or beam in the meet.

The Bears are back home next weekend, hosting their final home meet of the 2010 season. The meet on Sunday, February 7, is also the annual 'Pink Meet'. The Bears will be wearing special pink leotards and encourage their fans to wear pink as well as they work to raise money for breast cancer awareness. The dual meet against the Oregon State Beavers begins at 2 p.m. Admission for all home gymnastics meets this season is free for all fans.
