No. 9 Men's Tennis Coasts Past No. 57 UNC Wilmington 6-1 In ITA Kick-Off Opener

Jan. 29, 2010

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 9 Stanford cruised past No. 57 UNC Wilmington 6-1 on Friday afternoon, opening ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a victory and keeping its hopes alive for an appearance in the National Team Indoor Championships.

Stanford improved to 2-0 overall, as the Taube Family Tennis Stadium is one 15 host sites around the country for this weekend's tournament. The ITA Kick-Off Weekend features four teams at each site vying to advance to the National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cardinal wasted little time putting away the Seahawks (1-1, 0-0 Colonial), capturing the doubles point and winning six straight singles matches before UNC Wilmington garnered its only point of the match with a win at the No. 5 spot.

Stanford's top doubles pair and the nation's No. 1 team of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher improved to 15-2 overall with an 8-3 win over UNC Wilmington's top duo of Michael Pereira and Ryan Ybarra. The Cardinal's second doubles team of Alex Clayton and Richard Wire followed with an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 position, so the third doubles match was suspended.

Klahn won his seventh match in a row and 16th overall when he defeated Pereira 6-3, 6-0 at the top spot of the lineup, giving Stanford a 3-0 lead following a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 by Clayton.

Wire provided the clincher at No. 4, taking down Ryan Ybarra 6-4, 6-2.

Stanford now faces No. 45 Oklahoma, a 6-1 winner over No. 44 San Diego State earlier in the day, during the second round on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m.

San Diego State and UNC Wilmington will match up at 11 a.m.
