No. 1 USC Men Top Yale In ITA Kick-off Final

Jan. 31, 2010

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 1 USC men's tennis team put forth another dominant effort at Marks Stadium to close out the ITA Kick-off Weekend with a win over Yale that pushes the Trojans into the upcoming ITA National Team Indoor Championships. USC's smooth 7-0 win over the visiting Bulldogs was clinched by Daniel Nguyen at the No. 5 position, pulling USC to a 4-0 start to the 2010 dual match season.

USC went up 1-0 in the match thanks to doubles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots by the Trojans. Newly paired up senior-freshman combo Robert Farah / JT Sundling cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2 before Peter Lucassen / Jaak Poldma picked up the doubles point for USC with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Yale got the win at No. 1 in an 8-5 score over Jason McNaughton / Daniel Nguyen, but it was too late to cut into USC's lead in the match.

USC took a 2-0 lead in the match when an ankle injury forced Yale's Calvin Bennett to retire from his No. 3 match with Jaak Poldma leading 4-1. USC's #47 Matt Kecki cleaned up at the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Erik Blumenkranz to make it 3-0 USC. And minute later from the No. 5 slot, #78 Daniel Nguyen bounced past Daniel Hoffman 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match with USC up 4-0. The teams had decided in advance to play out the entire match, leaving matches still underway at No. 1, 2 and 4.

Peter Lucassen and #14 Robert Farah finished out their wins just moments apart. Lucassen won first with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4, while Farah completed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 to make it 6-0 USC. #1 Steve Johnson was still doing battle at No. 1 with Marc Powers. Johnson captured the first set 7-6 (2) in a tiebreak and got up a break in the second and held strong the rest of the way to close out the match with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory.

USC's next action brings UC Irvine to town on Tuesday (Feb. 2) for a 1:30 p.m. match at Marks Stadium. The Trojans will then face San Diego on Friday (Feb. 5) at 1:30 p.m. to continue their dual-match run.
